Conquering Social Media Like A Boss

Hi There!  My name is Danielle and for a while, I had no idea what to do with social media.  Yes, I posted pics of my dog, liked funny videos, and would occasional share inspirational quotes. 

But starting a new business is a whole different story.  What do I do with my business or fan page?  How do I know what to post?  And because I lean toward being a strategist - if I only had a strategy to implement a plan...

Can you relate?  As a small business owner, you wear a lot of hats.  You are the chief sales person, marketing guru, accountant, and visionary for your business.  Who has time to figure out marketing in a social media age?

What you and I need is a strategy. A strategy we can develop and put in place quickly.  A plan that will help us execute with efficiency. 

To be honest, when I started copywriting - I didn't know it all.  And neither do you.  It's a process. But through some training, Ive developed a process and strategy that anyone can implement. 

Three essentials for any social media strategy include...

Know Who You Are

That's right.  I know you're tempted to start with killer blog posts about your business or creating inspirational quotes for your Facebook fan page.  Don't do it!  Start with the hard work of developing your brand.  What do you want to be known for? Who or what do you want to portray to the world?  Get clear on the five words you want people to know about you and your business. Your strategy starts with clarity on your mission. 

Know Who You Are Trying To Reach

If there's anything I've learned from starting two businesses in the last year - it's that you can't reach everyone.  You need a niche.  You need a specialty.  When you target everyone, you hit no one.  It's that simple.  You need to plan for the type of customer you are trying to reach.  What is their biggest challenge?  Why would they search for you type of business? Who do they follow on social media?  What inspires them?  

Don't know the answers?  Take some time to get to know your current customers.  Ask open ended questions through surveys or on your current social media. Find out what inspires them and what frightens them.  Take some time to get to know your typical customer.  Narrowing your niche will expand your business. 

Schedule Your Time

You're not going to like this.  But being successful at building a community on social media takes time.  You need to build time into your schedule to focus on this aspect of your business.  Whether it's one hour a day or two hours a week, block out some time to plan your posts.  You can schedule posts in advance directly on Facebook and Twitter, or just use a scheduling app like Hoot Suite that lets you post to all outlets from one location.  Whatever makes your life easier and will help you be consistent.  Block out some time and make it happen.
